How To Release Control & Trust The Universe

How To Release Control & Trust The Universe

No matter where you’re at on your personal development journey, learning to surrender to the Universe takes continual work and patience – and a lot of it! You see, as humans, our brains are wired to protect us by making plans to control future outcomes. However, life doesn’t always go according to plan, and this year especially, many of us are facing a total shift in our daily lives, future goals, and even our priorities and values.

So, if you feel like life isn’t going the way you’d hoped, you’re not alone! The key to adjusting to our new reality lies in our ability to remain flexible, adaptable, and open to new possibilities. That’s why I’d like to share some helpful tips on how to release control and trust the Universe.

Get into the attitude of gratitude

Making a conscious effort to express gratitude for where you’re at in the here and now is an incredibly powerful tool for shifting your mindset into an abundant state. This is especially important if you’re feeling anxious or disappointed about a plan that fell through or if something didn’t go your way. Showing gratitude is something you actually can control, and that is going to greatly benefit your ability to remain optimistic and resilient.

Embrace the unknown

Even with the best preparation, you can’t control every single detail in your life. Whether that’s in a job, a relationship or any other area of your life, there are never any guarantees. That’s why accepting the unknown and even embracing uncertainty is a great skill to master.

In fact, the fear of the unknown actually keeps many people stuck in situations they have outgrown or dislike, because it’s a ‘comfortable’ option.  Again, our minds want to protect us, so we tend to stay in our comfort zone when given the opportunity. That’s why when huge shifts happen in our lives, it can be a GOOD thing! Now, this doesn’t mean that you’re always going to feel happy when your plans get derailed, that’s just not realistic! Instead, embracing the unknown means that you acknowledge those negative feelings, by journaling, meditating, etc., but then shift your mind back to the present moment and look for the silver lining and the next opportunity.

Pay close attention to your online screen/media time

It’s easy to get ourselves worked up by reacting to what sometimes feels like information overload: the news, social media, etc. But you’ve got to pay attention to where you are putting your energy as it could be building up unnecessary feelings to try and control something that’s completely uncontrollable. You’ll be able to surrender to the Universe much easier without unnecessary distractions clouding your emotions.

Slow down

When things feel out of control, it’s easy to get sucked into the chaos and completely lose the ability to drop into the present moment. Make sure you’re checking in with yourself on a regular basis and have a self-care tool-kit that encourages you to slow down. Whether it’s with meditation, yoga, breath-work, or another form of mindfulness,  adding a little Zen into your life, helps you see and understand things with much more clarity.

Give yourself permission to let go

When we get so attached to our plans, and they fall through, we can feel helpless and forget that we actually have other choices available to us. It’s very important to be mindful of this throughout your day because you will be able to give yourself permission to let go when you can. If there’s nothing you can do about a situation you’ve found yourself in, that’s totally okay. You have to just let it be and grant yourself permission to let it go. The thing you can control here is your ability to choose how to move forward.

Understand that everything is happening for your highest good

Ever failed a test? Or completely bombed a presentation? Or missed an important meeting because you got stuck in traffic? Well, the good news is, I’m sure we’ve all experienced some form of those uncontrollable moments. But the other good news is that we can always learn from our missteps – the ones we can control and the ones we cannot. The key here is to remember that it’s these situations that have the power to make us even stronger. That’s the Universe preparing you for your highest good.

Be open to new or different possibilities

Whether this is in your daily life or in the grand scheme of things, new possibilities will always open new doors. And as much as we wished we could control every situation, control itself is temporary. So no matter what life throws your way, understand that there will always be changing variables. That’s why when you remember that everything is happening for your highest good, it’s that much easier to recognize unforeseen circumstances as possibilities that can change your life for the better – you’ve just got to be open to it.

So now more than ever, we can oddly feel a sense of gratitude for these uncertain times because it’s forcing us to take inventory on our happiness and the wonderful possibilities that can come from the unknown. There’s power in knowing how to release control, especially when you learn to do it gracefully.
