How To Have Your Happiest Holiday (even when you're sad)

How To Have Your Happiest Holiday (even when you're sad)

The truth is, life is filled with ups and downs… and sometimes those downs happen over the holidays. So what happens when your holiday turns out not to be so merry and bright?

Being positive isn't about faking it or living in denial… it's about trusting that things will get better. So if you're sort of dreading this Christmas or just struggling to get into the spirit, I hope these 7-holiday tips that I’m about to reveal will help you to beat any holiday blues and help you have a happy holiday this year, even if circumstances are not ideal.

1. Connect To The Real Meaning Of The Holidays

The holidays can be so much more than simply being cheerful and opening presents. It’s also a time of retrospection, spirituality, and turning inward. Take advantage of this time to look back on the journey of life this year.

Consider what you’ve learned, and areas where you could grow and develop, and take some time to assess your dreams and commitments in life. Take responsibility for creating yourself anew while reflecting on all that has brought joy - ask yourself: What is most important? Where am I finding gratitude? How can I make my present work better than ever before?

2. Forget About Yourself By Helping Others

The more we focus on our problems, the bigger they become! Make an effort to refocus your attention on making someone else's life better and watch how yours is filled with more gratitude, purpose, and meaning!

Spread positivity in small ways - like wishing a Merry Christmas to clerks or others waiting in long lines- that will not only lighten their day but also help chase away those blues of your own. Give yourself the gift of happiness through selfless acts.

3. Give Yourself And Others The Gift Of Forgiveness

This holiday season, give yourself the ultimate gift - forgiveness.

Put aside any resentments towards those who have wronged you and let go of burdens that are no longer worth carrying… When you do this, you will not only free someone else from past mistakes but also liberate your soul from feelings of hurt and anger.

4. Open Up To Family Or Friends

When we feel down, lonely, or sad, the most comforting remedy is to be surrounded by those who care. Connecting with family and friends can help improve your emotional well-being; so reach out for a chat about what you’re going through. Opening up may take some courage but sharing how we truly feel has a powerful impact on our overall happiness.

5. Let Go Of Your Idea Of Perfection

The truth is this holiday may be different… And guess what? That is OK. This doesn’t mean it can’t still be beautiful in its own way.

Instead of striving for perfection this holiday season, try to focus on connecting with those you love in new ways. That could even mean simply taking a well-deserved break - to breathe and reset. And who knows, things could turn out just as special or perhaps more so by letting go of expectations and embracing what presents itself along the way!

6. Do More Of What You Love

Don't just sit there feeling sorry for yourself - it's time to be that funk-breaker! Embrace the holiday spirit and find something productive or fun. Get creative - paint a picture, take a jog, go exploring your neighborhood on foot... even singing along with your favorite happy song can do wonders.

7. Acknowledge All the Wonderful Things (Including YOURSELF!)

We all tend to be our own worst critics, over-focusing on the negative and giving too little credit for how great we are!

Why not take a few moments each day to jot down what's good in life?

Trust me, it will help you see that things aren't as bad as they appear. Hang your list somewhere where you can appreciate its reminders daily.

Remember… This season is all about finding out what brings happiness and joy to your life - don't be afraid to discover something new. Take the opportunity of these holidays as a chance for you to celebrate in whichever way makes you feel merry, whatever that may look like!

Now,  if regardless of how hard you try you’re still struggling to overcome negative thoughts and you feel like going into a downward spiral, I highly suggest you start by becoming aware of your subconscious limiting beliefs.
