6 Tips to Spring Clean Your Mind, Body, and Soul

Longer days, warmer evenings, showers and flowers - Spring 2023 is here! Which means one thing - spring cleaning! Time to head to the closets and start to declutter. Of course, “closet” can be a metaphor for other things in your life - such as your mind, body, and soul. Spring is the perfect time for cleanses and outdoor exercise and for revisiting those goals you set at the beginning of the year.

I don’t know about you, but I definitely start to feel a bit of spring fever right about now! This gives me the energy I need to exercise more, get up earlier, and tackle those tasks that just a few months ago seemed daunting.

I’ve put together some of my spring cleaning tips and just general life hacks for resetting your mind, body, and soul!

1) Get on a good sleep schedule

This applies to any time of year, but with the time change and longer days, it’s important to rest. Maybe shut off the TV and read at night to help with a restful sleep? Sleep impacts our moods, behaviors, and actions the next day. So if you aren’t going to bed at a reasonable hour, you may be feeling groggy and unmotivated. In order to reset yourself, I highly recommend starting a semi-strict sleep schedule so you can look and feel your best the next day.

2) Change your routine

Sometimes, the smallest adjustment in your routine can make the biggest difference. Life can become boring and stale when we do the same thing over and over, so any opportunity to brighten it up is great. It doesn’t have to be big changes, either. Take a different route to work, or walk down a different road in the evenings when you’re walking your dog, or go 30 minutes later. Also, consider some bigger changes - join a chorus or a dance class, find an adventure, or look into your local Meetup groups and find something that interests you.

3) Cut out sugar

It doesn’t have to be permanent, but cutting out sugar for even 30 days is incredibly beneficial. Did you know that your skin will look better when you remove all the sugar from your diet? Cutting out sugar gives you more natural energy and plays a major factor in reducing belly fat. There’s truly no down-side to losing sugar for awhile, if not forever. So why not say farewell to sugar for at least 30 days, and see how it goes.

4) Purge the things you don’t need

This doesn’t just mean all that extra stuff hiding away in the closet - but also social commitments you no longer enjoy or that drain your energy, unhealthy habits - anything that you feel brings you down to a level where you’re not feeling your best. So head to the closets, your calendar, and check your habits to see what could be improved by purging.

5) Boost your Vitamin D

Not only is Vitamin D essential for bone health, but it’s also been shown to help protect against certain viruses and even fight depression. Luckily there are a lot of options for boosting your Vitamin D. Just 20-25 minutes in the sun provides a significant amount of Vitamin D, but make sure to apply sunscreen before you soak up those rays. Fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, trout, and eel also provide Vitamin D. I like to choose wild caught when possible. Canned tuna is also a good source, as well as certain types of mushrooms and some orange juice. Be sure to check the labels.

6) Unplug

Another tip that’s good for any time, but why not add it to your spring cleaning list? Start with unplugging after work every evening, if possible, and then challenge yourself to see if you can go for a full weekend. Take up a new activity to make up for the time spent on your phone, computer, tablet or in front of the TV. It will probably be shocking at first to see how much time you actually spend in front of a screen, but you’ll soon fill that time with something new and better for you.
