Law of Attraction guru and Mind Movies co-founder Natalie Ledwell announced today the release of a new episode of her weekly web series, The Inspiration Show. In the episode, Stiffleman shares her background as a counselor and how she made the decision to shift her focus from working with kids who were exhibiting problematic behavior to working with parents.

Stiffleman says that many parents aren’t sure whether to be strict or permissive with their child and deal with constant power struggles. Stiffleman teaches parents the difference between being in control and being calmly and confidently in charge. She says that when parents feel the need to be in control, they often resort to bribing or threatening.

Instead, Stiffleman teaches parents to “come alongside their child” rather than “at them.” Coming alongside a child, Stiffleman coaches, involves showing authority, not gaining power. She teaches parents to “think for themselves and feel what’s best for their child regardless of how they were raised.”

Stiffleman says that kids want someone in charge. Instead of wanting someone to fix their problems, they need help in learning how to navigate through the frustration they are feeling. According to Stiffleman, “kids really thrive when they know that you can handle what's going on without feeling that you have to fix it.”

To keep authority and reduce power struggles, Stiffleman suggests that parents use “Act 1 parenting,” which is to allow the child to become upset, and then get three “yes statements” from the child. Once the parent does that, Stiffleman says that the child will start to relax as they begin to realize that someone is in charge. Stiffleman says that once parents help the child deal with the storm of emotion that they are having, they start to be receptive towards guidance.
