Simple Ways To Add Exercise Into Your Daily Life

Simple Ways To Add Exercise Into Your Daily Life

I’m not going to sugarcoat it, for quite some time, I’ve had a love-hate relationship with working out. Starting a new workout routine always feels like a fun idea at the beginning but somehow, with the ups and downs of life, my busy schedule, traveling, and so on, I sometimes find it difficult to stick to my workouts consistently.

While I understand the benefits of exercise and physical activity are great for things like my mood, energy levels, mental health, and overall wellness, committing to working out every day can sometimes be challenging. But I was determined to find some new exercises and even a home-workout that I could fit into my busy and often fluctuating schedule.

Here’s the thing – finding time to get a workout in shouldn’t have to be overwhelming. And the kind of exercise you do shouldn’t make you feel miserable. So! I wanted to share some fun and easy workout tips you can incorporate into your daily routine that get your endorphins going and give the home workout a brand new meaning!

Couple Sitting on Yoga Mat
When you're on the job:

  • Walk or ride your bike to work

  • Schedule in workouts on your calendar and treat them like meetings with yourself

  • Walk to grab a coffee from a local coffee shop

  • Use your lunch break as a time for a workout or a walk

  • Set a reminder periodically throughout the day to get up and stretch or stretch out your muscles while you’re sitting at your desk

  • Instead of having sit-down meetings over lunch, opt for a walking meeting or even a hike where everyone can walk and talk together

  • Tidy up or reorganize your office

  • Instead of sitting, opt to stand up or walk around when taking phone calls or invest in a standing desk (I just got one, and it’s fantastic!)

If you're out and about:

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator/escalator

  • Instead of driving to run errands, walk or bike to your destination

  • Park your car the furthest distance from where you’re heading to get in extra steps

  • Perform shoulder raises in the car while you’re driving

  • Tone your lower body while you’re driving by clenching your glutes or doing inner thigh squeezes

  • Instead of sitting down for a coffee date, take your coffee on the go and have a walking coffee date instead

  • Hang out with friends at the pool and do a few laps or exercises in the sun

Around the house or as you wind down for the evening:

  • Clean the house (mopping, sweeping, scrubbing – it all counts!)

  • Perform a few sets of squat exercises while you brush your teeth

  • Play with your kids and pets

  • Perform 10 push-ups or sit-ups before you get in bed

  • Turn on some tunes and dance your heart out

  • During commercial breaks or in between episodes, perform calisthenic exercises, like push-ups, lunges, crunches, squats, etc., while you watch TV (I keep my yoga mat right by my TV – it helps!)

  • Stretch in bed just before you fall asleep

You see, it’s taken me quite some time to realize that the goal of physical fitness shouldn’t be to focus on how you look – it’s all about how you FEEL! So I hope these fun any easy exercises empower you to fall in love with exercise for the emotional and spiritual benefits too!

It’s this type of thinking that allows you to propel forward in life, instead of getting stuck in procrastination and self-sabotage – something my friend and neuroscience expert, John Assaraf, knows a lot about.
