Recovering From Failure: How To Bounce Back From 3 Common Financial Blocks

After more than a decade of coaching people, I’ve found that money is one of the biggest reasons we turn to personal growth.

If you’re like most people, you too have your own set of financial blocks that stop you from earning, saving and multiplying your income… and that may at times leave you feeling like a financial failure.

But having worked with people from all walks of life, I’m constantly reminded that it’s possible to recover from failure brought on by any financial block - and in some cases, even use these challenges as a springboard towards financial freedom and success.

I recently ran a survey to 4,439 people in our community, asking them:

Which of the following best describes the biggest factor holding you back from being happier with your finances?

Here are their 3 most common answers, along with the best advice I give to my students dealing with each one:

1. “I Don’t Earn Enough Money” (50.66%)

Not earning enough money is unsurprisingly the most common financial block people have - and it can often feel like the hardest one to overcome.

The problem is, most of us are waiting for that one big lucky break to start earning more - like a raise, a dream job offer, or the least likely of all… winning the lottery.

But what if that big lucky break never comes? And what if instead of hoping for a miracle, you take inspired to action by exploring small, yet meaningful steps you can take towards earning your dream income. For instance, you could…

1. Work on your inner wealth blocks: use meditation, visualization and other personal growth tools to reprogram your money beliefs and emotions. This will erase your inner resistance to money and will make it far easier to attract more of it into your life.

2. Learn a new skill: whether it’s a musical instrument or some form of handiwork, people are always willing to pay for expertise. Plus, mastering a new skill is a great way to…

3. Create multiple streams of income: consider renting out your skills, renting out your assets like your home or your car, or even opening a small online business (which is how I started Mind Movies!).

4. Optimize your life: which of your habits and daily rituals are holding you back from earning and achieving your highest potential? Do you procrastinate? Do you watch mindless TV shows in your spare time, when you could be learning or growing? Replace these money-sapping habits with empowering ones, and watch your income soar.

2. “I Don’t Have Enough Savings” (26.58%)

Making enough money is one thing - but holding onto it is another. So many of us struggle to make ends meet, let alone consistently save a portion of our income every month - how is this possible?

There are four steps I tell my students to take when it comes to saving more money:

1. Have a savings goal: savings goals work like any other goals - you’re far more likely to focus on and achieve them when you actually set them.

Do the math and set a realistic financial goal as to how much you’d like to save over the next 1, 5 and 10 years - then put that money aside, and stay focused on the amount you’re trying to save. Keep visualizing and meditating on that number!

2. Pay yourself first: when people get paid, they tend to pay up all their bills and expenses first, before setting aside whatever they have left (if anything) for personal savings at the end of the month. Try reversing this pattern: at the very start of the month, put aside the amount you need to stay on track towards your savings goal.

3. Track your spending: use a notebook to categorize and keep track of everything you spend in a month. At the end of the month, review it to find out what category you spent most on, and where you could possibly save more money. The very act of tracking your expenditures makes you less likely to spend on unnecessary things.

4. Do the inner work: many people have a limiting belief that they are somehow not worthy of money - and so they subconsciously find ways to get rid of it, even after it has come to them.

Liberating yourself from beliefs like these is crucial if you’re looking to recover from failure, and get the Law of Attraction working in your favor.

3. “I Tend To Overspend” (10.5%)

Most people spend more than they have to, and at least 15 million Americans have been diagnosed with a “Compulsive Spending Disorder.”

So whether it’s overpriced food, expensive cars, lavish vacations, or just buying things we don’t need… why do we spend more than we should?

Poor financial planning is one factor (see my previous point about tracking your spending and having a savings goal)...

But in my experience, the main reason most people overspend is that on some level, they’re trying to fill a void in another area of their life. So if you have an overspending habit, is it possible you are…

- Stuck in a soul-sapping job?

- Lonely?

- Trying to avoid a specific problem?

- Blaming yourself for something?

- Bored, unchallenged or unfulfilled?

The joy of spending is the ability to temporarily hide the negative emotions that creep up from the above situations - but they quickly come rushing back the moment the short-lived euphoria wears off.

And so, apart from improving your financial planning, the main thing to do if you want to overcome overspending is to take an honest look at your life and address the issues that are blocking your greater happiness and fulfillment.
