3 Ways to Thrive During Challenging Times

Every human being on the planet faces times of stress and intensity from time to time.

But instead of letting ourselves get dragged down into the dark depths of a challenging situation, here are 3 tips that will help you pull yourself up into the light:

Tip #1: Ask for Support

So many of us believe that it's a sign of strength to be able to "go it alone." But the truth is that the fundamental nature of being human is to be in relationship with others.

That being said, it's critical to ask for help when you need it.

You may feel like you don't necessarily need advice or feedback about your situation. But simply asking a friend to sit, listen and bear witness while you share what's in your head or your heart can be extremely therapeutic.

Don't be afraid to reach out to others for help. When you do, you often give them a tremendous gift as well, as most people get an enormous sense of satisfaction from being able to contribute to others even in the smallest of ways.

Tip #2: Change Your Focus

Instead of focusing on what's bad about what's happening - or worse yet, asking yourself "Why is this happening to ME?" - shift your focus to what's good about the situation.

This may seem challenging in difficult circumstances, but keep in mind that even people who have faced intense personal loss or survived critical illnesses and disease have managed to find something positive to focus on.

Does the circumstance you're facing give you the ability to let go of some ideas, beliefs or people that may no longer be serving you? Does it give you an opportunity to connect on a deeper level with those around you?

Do your best to create a more empowering context for the situation you find yourself in, and before you know it, you'll begin feeling lighter, happier and more positive.

Tip #3: Help Others

One of the fastest ways to shift yourself out of a spiral of negative thinking about a challenging situation is to focus on elevating others who find themselves in difficult circumstances.

Consider calling a friend to ask how they're doing, or sending an encouraging email to someone you know who is struggling. You may even want to consider helping out at a local soup kitchen, food bank or something similar once or twice a week.

Doing what you can to help others will not only benefit them, it will also shift your focus to contribution and gratitude, which will help alleviate stress, anxiety, sadness or feelings of "stuckness" in your present situation.
